Stan the Hot Dog Man
Booklist

Gr. 1-3. Stan is happy to retire from his bakery job because now he can start his own hot dog business. With his specially outfitted van, he sets up at roadside, selling hot dogs to a variety of satisfied customers. Stan sells year-round, which leads to an adventure--a blizzard that strands him and a school bus with two children still on board. The kids and driver wait the storm out in Stan's van, their stomachs full of hot dogs and their heads full of Stan's stories. The simple sentences avoid being choppy, and the characterization of Stan is distinctive, even given the restrictions of beginning-to-read vocabulary. His good spirits are catching. --Denise Wilms

Gr 1-3 --A readable but sometimes stilted text introduces Stan while he is working at a bakery. He retires and immediately becomes a ``hot dog man'' in his own van, parked on a popular street corner. Stan is very happy, and his business is doing well until he is stranded in a snow storm, along with a school bus. The children and the bus driver climb into the hot dog van and enjoy themselves while waiting for the snow plow to rescue them. Kessler uses gently washed pen-and-ink drawings to add interest and detail to the story. Stan is just grandfatherly enough and his wife Emma is a perfect grandmotherly match as his friend and companion. This title is not the cream of the crop in the ``I Can Read'' series, but it will be well used in all collections that need material for beginning readers. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA (c) Copyright 2010. After retiring from his job in a bakery, Stan enjoys his new career as a hot-dog vendor. When a school bus gets stuck in a snowstorm, Stan's warm truck provides food and shelter until help arrives. Undistinguished watercolors; a mildly exciting story that hot dog lovers will relish. From HORN BOOK 1990, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
